Creativity Tips from a Houston Professional Photographer (and Serial Creative)
I’m Christine, owner of Lightbulb League, one of Houston's Favorite Brand Photography Studios. Today’s post is coming from my personal experience as a serially creative person, and applying my journey to my work as a professional brand photographer. Along with starting a career as a creative professional almost 15 years ago as a wedding photographer then transitioning into my current position of brand photographer, I also apply creativity to almost everything I do; painting, gardening, homemaking, clothing, designing, and applying my style to generally anything I do. I wanted to share some creativity tips that have been game-changers for me as a professional photographer and serial creative. Whether you're a seasoned pro or just starting your creative journey, I’d recommend trying out these tips to help you unlock your unique potential.
Lean into What Makes Your Work Unique
Every artist has something special that sets their work apart. For me, it's about capturing the essence of a brand through compelling visuals. Something I’ve heard time and time again from clients is that they like how my work is minimal, feminine, effortless, and doesn’t look overly posed. We work really hard to make our visuals look effortless and comfortable even though we are very meticulous with posing and styling.
Identify what makes your work unique and lean into it. Go big or go home! Maybe it’s your use of color, your knack for capturing candid moments, or your ability to tell a story through your images. Known for your use of flowers in your work? Create a massive set using flowers! Love the color green in your work? Make a green monotone piece or series! Embrace these qualities wholeheartedly. They are your signature style, and showcasing them can set you apart in a crowded market.
Experiment with Your Current Work
Creativity thrives on experimentation. Don’t be afraid to try new techniques or perspectives within your current work. I’ve personally experienced burnout a few times from going through the motions and being on auto pilot when it comes to how I was photographing what was in front of my lens. Whether it’s playing with different lighting setups, exploring unconventional angles, or incorporating new editing styles, pushing the boundaries of your comfort zone can lead to unexpected and exciting results. Remember, some of the most innovative ideas come from a willingness to experiment and take risks. So, shake things up and see where it takes you!
Try Something Totally New to You
Stepping outside of your creative comfort zone can be incredibly invigorating. If you’re a photographer, try your hand at painting or sculpting. If you’re a writer, dabble in photography or graphic design. Trying something completely new can refresh your perspective and infuse your primary creative work with fresh ideas and inspiration. Plus, learning a new skill is always a rewarding experience that can open up new avenues for creative expression.
Additional perk: when I’ve invested in my creative journey by trying my hand at a new artistic skill, I’ve met so many people who I ended up working with in some shape or form in the future. Creative collaborations galore. Some have even become friends, like the following story: below is an example of a collaboration between an artist friend I, who I met many years ago who painted a photo I took. Her name is Michelle Collins and I met her when I was trying something totally new to me.
Incorporating these tips into your creative routine can make a world of difference. Lean into what makes your work unique, experiment with your current projects, and don’t hesitate to try something totally new. By doing so, you’ll keep your creative spirit alive and continually evolve as an artist.
