Headshot 101: How to Practice for your Headshots

April 11, 2022

We’re back for the third and final post of our 3 part series containing everything you need to know for your professional headshot session. This post is all about how to practice for your headshots. Yes, you read that right. PRACTICE.

Quick pause to make sure you’ve read parts 1 and 2; What to Wear for Your Headshot and How to Style Yourself for Headshots.

Now that you’re all up to speed, let’s talk about how to practice for your professional headshots.

How to Practice for Your Headshot Session

Just like you would show a hairstylist photos of the kind of haircut you might want, communicating with your photographer about how you want your headshots to look is equally as important. In part 2 of this series, we talked about choosing the tone of your photos (which can influence the clothing you wear and the style of your hair and makeup). It influences other things as well, so talk with your photographer about the tone/ vibe you’re going for so they can help you achieve that with the appropriate backdrop color, lighting choice, and camera equipment.

Practice Makes Perfect

We all have photos that we love of ourselves, right? Even if it’s not a professional photo, we can identify that we love that our teeth aren’t showing in one, or that you like how your eyes look in another, or that your ‘good side’ is captured in another. It’s important to determine what you like, or more importantly, dislike, about photos of yourself so you can communicate that to your photographer. It takes the guess work out of your session so you know you’ll like the end result.

A couple of days before your headshots, we highly recommend practicing some different poses, faces, and expressions you might want to portray in your photos. It’s as simple as perusing the internet for ideas and tips. We recommend Pinterest and Instagram for sources of inspiration.

As you practice in front of a mirror, note how your face feels when you make the expression you want in your photos. We also recommend a dress rehearsal, if you will. You want to make sure that your clothing fits well before your session, so we recommend a quick try! Nothing worse than showing up and realizing your outfit won’t work.
